Learn How to Detune Your Board in Two Minutes Flat
WHO?
Anyone with a brand new board. There are those who don’t detune their boards, but it’s definitely a recommended
procedure. Having the edges sharp all the way around can cause you to catch edges much more easily.
WHAT?
The tip and tail of that brand new board!
WHEN?
Before you ride it!
WHERE?
Anywhere! But you may end up with some tiny metal shavings so it’s probably best to not do this on mom’s favorite
white carpet.
WHY?
This will keep your board from ‘hooking’ into turns too early and make it less squirrelly when you’re riding on flats.
HOW?
Get your file out and go crazy!
1. Really, the main thing you need to determine is where your contact points are. The easy way to do that is to put the board on
edge on the floor or against a wall - the points where the edge contacts the floor/ wall are the contact points.
2. Use a bastard file and round off the edge on the tip and tail of your board (NOTE: many boards come detuned from the factory
so you won’t need to do this at all). You'll want to round it off to somewhere around the contact points - exactly where comes down
to personal preference.
3. Edges are usually detuned to an inch or so past the actual contact point. If you’re most interested in speed and carving,
then you may want to stop right at the contact point to maximize the effective edge of your board. For a more playful, jibbing
board you’ll probably detune a little farther.
