Learn How to P-Tex Your Snowboard in Two Minutes Flat

WHO?
Anyone who’s interested in doing a little more in-depth snowboard maintenance.

WHAT?
Patch minor dings in your snowboard base.

WHEN?
When you notice small gouges or scratches in the base of your snowboard.

WHERE?
On a workbench, in a well-ventilated area.

WHY?
Smooth bases go faster, you dig? There will be more surface area that touches the snow to absorb wax. Plus, it looks nice...

HOW?

1. Get your kit together:
Snowboard
Vises
Base Cleaner (and cloth)
Butane or Propane torch (lighter or matches to light it)
P-tex candle
Metal Scraper

2. Clean the base where you plan to p-tex it with base cleaner – make sure it’s fully dry before you start the repair.

3. Light the torch. Adjust the flame so it burns blue, not yellow or orange.

4. Light the P-tex candle – hold it in the flame until it lights, then keep it moving slowly to keep the flame burning blue. When the flame is yellow or orange, it burns carbon, which leaves black residue in your p-tex patch. You can keep the flame constant by rotating the candle with your fingers, by keeping it over your metal scraper, or by sheltering it with your free hand.

5. Use the p-tex candle like a crayon or brush to "color" p-tex in the areas you’re filling.

6. Layer it on to fill gouges – don’t try to cram a lot in at once.

7. When you’re done adding p-tex, allow the board base to cool completely.

8. Take your metal scraper and scrape the excess p-tex gradually off to make the base smooth and flat. Use the scraper as you would a plastic scraper to remove wax – hold it in both hands with your thumbs at the bottom edge. Angle the top of the scraper away from you and scrape away from you, pressing down with your thumbs.

9. If you still have low spots, you can go back and add more p-tex to fill in, using the same process.
